Don’t have enough money
In 2022, I worked on a zero to one crypto product for Dave. Our goal was to make crypto more approachable via education and lower the barrier to entry. Dave received funding from FTX and had a partnership to use their API for our crypto product. I worked with FTX to incorporate their API and designed the educational articles, crypto homepage, and the buy/sell experience.

How might we incorporate crypto into the Dave ecosystem in a way that appeals to a low income audience?
Design a crypto experience that emphasizes education and provides low risk ways for members to enter the space.

Crypto is too risky
"Is it real money or fake money? Is it like an investment? [...] Where does the crypto come from? Is $20 in crypto the same as $20? Is it a loan?"
- Raven, Dave member, from qualitative research
We released a crypto waitlist to build up excitement around crypto and gauge member interest. I included links for them to learn about crypto basics so we could start getting feedback on the education. In order to appeal to low-income members and lower the barrier to entry, they can buy in for as little as $1 upon release.
The design emphasizes education so members would feel comfortable with crypto. I created an education section with basic crypto articles and a glossary so they could start familiarizing themselves with crypto terms. I worked with our content designer to break down the info into digestible pieces.
Design iterations explored different ways to break down the content and navigate to the next page.
We decided to release with only Bitcoin instead of multiple coins to simplify the experience and encourage higher conversion for first-time crypto buyers. Many coins such as LUNA and Dogecoin were volatile at the time due to the Crypto Winter of 2022 and we didn’t want to encourage Dave members to get involved in risky investments. I broke down the steps to get started to highlight how easy it was.
Dave’s plans for crypto got cancelled because FTX went bankrupt. We had planned to use FTX’s API for our crypto platform and luckily didn’t because Dave members could’ve lost their funds. There was a lot of doubt around crypto within Dave because of the Crypto Winter of 2022. Although Dave Crypto was never released, I’m proud of what the team has accomplished and the work we have done to make crypto more accessible for the average person.
